SELLING BASEBALL?
Minor League Baseball is over for the season. Magazines and newspapers are telling us that again Minor League surpassed last year’s attendance.
I have written several articles on how Minor League Baseball has changed in the last 50 years. A good example of this appears in the Baseball America September 24-October 7, 2007 issue.
The article is tilted, “Crazy Hot Dog Vendor Rallies Fans In Reading”. It appears that an off-hand idea has developed into a centerpiece of promotional effort in Reading, PA. A hyperactive screaming hot dog vendor, an ostrich named Rodringo has became the face of the franchise.
During the middle of the second inning out comes the crazy vendor wearing a stuffed ostrich costume pretending to struggle to maintain his balance while whipping hot dogs into the crowd.
At your winter yearly meetings of the minor leagues a large area containing many tables promoting items such as bobble-head figures, firework companies, costumes for mascots, and ideas for games and activities during innings.
I guess you cannot argue with success but are they really selling baseball.
