VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP
I hope you are having a joyous holiday season. We have been very busy at the Township with several projects to help make this Christmas merry for those in need of our help.
Last column I told you about the Christmas party for our payee clients. We also have a Christmas party for our Outreach clients.
Like the payee party we receive donations so we can have a dinner and nice holiday event for current Outreach families and for previous clients who have successfully completed our Outreach program. About one hundred families were invited to this year’s party.
Outreach includes our Self-Sufficiency Program, as well as our Emergency Housing program. Clients in the Self-Sufficiency Program are taught skills necessary to achieve permanent self-sufficiency, while being provided help with their housing needs. The Emergency Housing Program provides housing for individuals and families who have lost their homes temporarily either due to fire or other reasons.
At the Outreach Christmas party, not only do the individuals and families get a nice dinner, the party includes live entertainment by our own Lead Intake Investigator, Mike DePew, on the saxophone. Santa visits the party with toys for each child and adults are eligible for door prizes.
Our office works with the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program to provide toys for the children. I want to thank my staff, particularly Outreach Coordinator Tameka Crook, as well as the businesses and organizations that donated to make this year’s Outreach party a success.
Another project the Wayne Township Trustee’s Office has undertaken this season is to coordinate providing gifts from the Christmas Bureau for eighteen client families. In addition, we helped with arrangements for children of some our clients to receive gifts of clothing, books and personal items from the Assistance League, which also sponsored a party for the children.
I am so thankful for the many donations our very generous community makes at this time of year to help those in need.
Recently, I had the privilege of attending and assisting with the ribbon cutting of the new Public Safety Academy at the Southtown Centre. What a wonderful Christmas gift this facility is, both for the training of first responders and for the continued revitalization of the Southtown area.
I am so pleased to see Southtown, which is in Wayne Township, become a hub of activity again with retail stores as well as the new Public Safety Academy.
