HONORING CIVIL WAR REENACTORS

civil war reenactors honoredState Representative Matt Lehman (R-Berne) authored a House Resolution honoring Civil War reenactors for their efforts to keep Indiana’s heritage of bravery alive. The resolution passed the House unanimously.

“Reenactors are living historians, giving history a fuller meaning for new generations of Hoosiers,” said Rep. Lehman. “Reenactment is a great way to remember and honor those who gave the last full measure of devotion so that we can enjoy our freedoms.”

Through both reenactments and classroom presentations, men and women throughout Indiana ensure that Hoosiers remember the sacrifice and bravery of Civil War soldiers. Over 200,000 Hoosiers responded to the Union’s need for soldiers and more than 24,000 died for the cause of freedom. Indiana regiments fought in all the major battles of the Civil War, from Gettysburg to Antietam, and conducted themselves with bravery and valor.

“Indiana has a rich history, and as a Civil War reenactor myself for 12 years, I understand how important it is to pass down these stories to the next generation, remembering those who have made significant contributions to our state,” said Rep. Lehman.

The actions of Hoosier soldiers are memorialized in many places in Indiana, including many cemeteries and most courthouses in the state. Civil War reenactors add to the memorialization with their live representations of Indiana’s Civil War heritage.
