GETTING STARTED – HOMESCHOOLING IS WHERE THE HEART IS!
Hello Waynedale and surrounding communities. I’m excited to share and explore the world of homeschooling with you. For the past few years we have been hearing a lot about school choice; I’m here to remind you that school choice includes the wander and wonderful world of homeschooling. I include the word wander because you just wouldn’t believe all the opportunities out there to homeschool outside of your home.
Let me tell you a little about myself. I’m the single mother of a 9-year girl. We began our homeschooling journey after I pulled her out of school midway through the 2013-2014 school year (yes, it can be done)!
The idea of homeschooling was not farfetched for me. When I sent my daughter to kindergarten I questioned the need for her to be there for a full day. In fact, I was downright angry about it. I hated the idea of it and I’m not a fan of the word hate.
I was active in my daughters schooling, volunteering to assist her teachers in the classroom and going on every possible field trip I could. There’s just something special about the bond between a single mom and her little girl. You don’t believe me? Go to the main library and check out the television show “The Gilmore Girls” on DVD.
What can you expect of me? Once a month I will inform you of one aspect of the homeschooling life. What do I expect of you? That you will email me with your homeschooling questions at homeschooling heart@gmail.com.
Future topics include: What does the IDOE (Indiana Department of Education) expect of homeschooling parents? How long has the idea of homeschooling existed? Where do I find the appropriate curriculum for my child? Is it possible to homeschool more than one child at the same time? How do I keep my child socially active during the homeschool day? What if my family and friends are not supportive? Should I give my child tests? The list goes on and on!
