INTERN WITH THE INDIANA STATE SENATE – Straight From The Senate

Internships are essential to getting ahead in today’s competitive job market. The Indiana Senate Republican Caucus offers a variety of full-time internships for students to gain experience and get a closer look at the state legislature.

The Senate’s internship program is well-respected and provides a number of benefits including receiving academic credit, scholarship opportunities and a biweekly stipend of $700. Applications for the 2015 legislative session are now available to college students and recent graduates, as well as those in graduate and law school.

Interns work at the Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis and assist senators and staff with various tasks while learning about the legislative process. They gain valuable skills from working in a fast-paced and multi-faceted work environment.

The program begins with orientation in late December and concludes at the end of the legislative session in late April. These are full-time positions, Monday through Friday, with a minimum work day of 8:30 a.m. through 4:45 p.m.

Our internship opportunities include:
·Information Technology – During session, interns will assist staff and senators in troubleshooting technology as well as implementing new devices and programs.

·Legal – Interns will conduct legal research and file legislative documents. Other responsibilities will include summarizing bill amendments and creating the daily legislative agenda.

·Legislative – Interns will work with senators on tracking legislation and assisting constituents. Other duties may include attending committee hearings and conducting research.

·Press Secretary – Working with members of the media and writing news releases are just a few tasks interns will be assigned. They will work with a full-time press secretary and caseload of senators to communicate with the media and constituents.

·Policy – Interns assist in drafting talking points and conducting research on legislative issues. Responsibilities consist of tracking legislation in both the House of Representatives and Senate along with developing a comprehensive legislative summary for senators.

·Visual Communications – Interns will help with graphic design and website management. They will also serve as a photographer and videographer.

The internship program recently helped earn the Indiana Senate the distinction of 2014 Employer of the Year by Indiana INTERNet, an internship matching program established by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce. The Senate takes pride in our internship program as 80 percent of our current staff participated in the program before being hired.

I encourage students in all academic majors to apply for our internship program to gain the skills and experience that will set them apart when entering the workforce.
