VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP

RICHARD A. STEVENSONI am so pleased when my staff takes the initiative to go beyond everyday duties to do something additional to assist our clients. I have a great staff that always goes the extra mile for our clients and often goes the extra two miles so we can be one of the best, most efficient Townships in the State.

One of our staff members who recently took the initiative to do something extra is our Employment Director, LeRoy Page. Mr. Page created a list of the “Trustee’s Top Ten” employment tips and is sharing this list with clients both during their Township orientation class and during their employment training classes. Ultimately, we plan to have a sign made containing the tips, which will be posted at our office.

One of my highest priorities has been and continues to be helping our clients find jobs. We consider our clients to be partners in their employment search with our office and with the employers to which we refer them. The goal of the “Trustee’s Top Ten” is to help our client-partners better navigate the employment process at the Wayne Township Trustee’s Office.

The first point on our “top ten” list is for clients to “Attend all requested meetings” at our office. Obviously, that would include Wednesday employment training and orientation class. When Mr. Page and I speak at these classes, we use this time with our clients to encourage them in their employment search, as well as challenge them to find employment. Many of our clients have been rejected so many times that they have lost the confidence to believe they can find jobs. Sometimes, the encouragement and training they receive at our office gives them that little extra push they need to get a job.

The second point on the “top ten” list is that clients should “Dress for success at each meeting” in our office “as if interviewing for a job.” Asking clients to dress for success when coming to our office gets them used to dressing in proper work attire again and is good for their self-esteem.

The third item on the list is that clients should review our “Wall of Opportunity” every time they visit our office. The “Wall of Opportunity” is a large board that faces you immediately when you enter our lobby.

The Wall contains information about numerous current job openings. We are proud to call it the ‘Wall of Opportunity” because it provides new opportunities for clients to find employment. Over fifty job openings were posted on the wall during March, and we certainly hope several of our clients will find jobs by following up on these employment opportunities.

The next three items on the list involve internal office procedures including clients accepting all job referrals we give them, clients applying for those jobs on the referrals and clients returning the signed referrals to us. Point seven on our ‘top ten” list is being on time and dressed for success at all job interviews. Most employers are looking for just one or a few good workers. If you want the job, according to Mr. Page, you must be the one to impress the employer.

The final three points on our list refer to clients after they have attained employment. Item eight asks clients to advise our office when they get a job so we can celebrate with them. Item nine reminds clients who have been hired to be on time and be a success at their new place of employment. The final point asks clients who have gotten jobs to contact us and let us know if there are other job openings at their workplace. Armed with that information, we may be able to help another client move from assistance to independence.

Easter is upon us, and I am looking forward to celebrating with my family. I hope everyone in Waynedale has a very happy Easter too.
