WOMEN’S GOLF TEAM OPEN SPRING SCHEDULE – SUNSHINE SPRING CLASSIC
It was a 36-hole tournament that took place at Walkabout Golf and Country Club on March 11 and 12, 2011.
The IUPUI women’s golf team opened their spring portion of its schedule when the Jaguars took part in the inaugural Sunshine Spring Classic at the par-72, 6, 102-yard Walkabout Golf and Country Club. The field was highlighted by 96 golfers total that hit the links. The two-day event began on Friday (March 11) and concluded on Saturday. Participants included Albany, Creighton, Florida Tech, Indiana State, IPFW, Lehigh, Loyola (Ill.), Radford, Seminole State, SIU-Edwardsville, St. Francis (Ill.), Weber International and Youngstown State.
This was the first of four events the Jaguars were slated to play during the week of Spring Break.
Head Coach John Andrews’ roster keys up a trio of junior Kristi O’Brien, a graduate of Bishop Luers High School, Fort Wayne, and sophomores Jordan Essman and Jordan Woods at the top of the lineup.
From there, they participated in the Don Benbow Invitational in Jacksonville, Florida, hosted by Butler, at Jacksonville Beach-March 14-15.
At the Bulldog Florida Invitational Kristi O’Brien (78-76=154) claimed her 5th career tourney win taking the Jags on top to win, the first time since 2007. The team’s final round 321 pulled even with Butler at 658 and awarded the IUPUI team with a victory through a scorecard playoff.
At Windsor Parke Golf Course, O’Brien fired an opening round 78 and was tied for the lead heading into Friday’s match.
She shot a 40 on the front. “I had some 7- or 8-footers that saved pars or bogeys,” reported Kristi.
“She was really grinding out there,” IUPUI Head Coach John Andrews said of O’Brien’s first round. “Her short game was really good. This golf course was much harder and she’s the type that likes that the course is a little tougher.”
The Jaguars’ wrapped up their spring break at the C & F Bank Women’s Intercollegiate in Willamsburg, Virginia. IUPUI is one of 19 teams in the field held at the par-72 Blackheath Course at Ford’s Colony Resort.
O’Brien enters the spring ranked sixth in the league in stroke average through the 2010 fall season at 77.0. Last year, the Waynedale-native won the CSU Cougar Classic on September 20-21 and earned three top 10 finishes among her five tournament entries.
