PET FOOD PANTRY OPENS IN WAYNEDALE

The Fort Wayne Pet Food Pantry will be open every other Saturday beginning in January 2019 at 2502 Church St. in Waynedale. “We are very excited to be a part of the Waynedale Community and look forward to building local relationships”.

Pet food distributions start on January 12 and are every other Saturday thereafter from 11am-12pm. For assistance applications, a full list of distribution dates, to learn how to volunteer and donate, the public can visit www.fwpetfoodpantry.com

As an all volunteer organization, they provide free pet food as an animal care service to those who have financial hardships. They feel that pets are so important to the health and well being of their clients, providing much needed companionship.

This nonprofit organization was started out of a deep concern for the number of pets going into our local shelters and ultimately the number of pets being euthanized each year. Approximately 25% of pets turned in to shelters are due to economic reasons.

In 2016 the Pet Food Pantry was distributing 23,000 lbs of dry food plus can food and treats. Last year they gave out just under 55,000 lbs. In 2018 they are on track to provide over 65,000 lbs of dry food plus cans and treats to their clients and their pets.

Currently they distribute pet food out of 8 local church run food banks and every other Saturday at HOPE for Animals. HOPE has allowed them to use their lobby for the past 8 years and they are very thankful for that support.

The Pet Food Pantry is supported by community donations. People can send in monetary donations as well as donate pet food. There are donation bins at several local businesses so people can donate food whenever and wherever is convenient for them.

The Pet Food Pantry also partners with businesses in Allen County who allow them access to their employees for holding pet food drives at their facilities. “It is amazing how many animal lovers understand our mission and support our cause in HUGE ways”. If you work at a local business and would like to host a pet food drive, please contact Board President John Lantz at jlantz72@hotmail.com.
