Beulah Matczak and Diana West were invited by Senator Joe Donnelly to attend the National Vietnam Veterans Day Celebration at Plainfield High School in Indianapolis on Thursday, March 29th.
U.S. Senators Pat Toomey, R – PA and Joe Donnelly, D-IN introduced legislation in 2017 to honor Vietnam Veterans as a day on the anniversary of the withdrawal of military units from South Vietnam.
President Trump signed the Vietnam War Veterans Day Act on March 28, 2017. All U.S. flags were to be flown on March 29th for all Vietnam Veterans who served.
It was a great event that U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly welcomed home veterans from across Indiana as a part of the ceremony. There were Gold Star Families, veterans of other wars, Vietnam veterans and families, and veteran’s organizations in attendance.
Kent Laudeman from South Bend was the keynote speaker. He is a Vietnam War and Gulf War veteran. He is also the director of the Robert L. Miller Sr. Veteran’s Center for Homeless Veterans in South Bend. There were members of the Gordon Pipers, members of the Indiana National Guard 38th Infantry Division Band, and the Indiana chapter of the Rolling Thunder.
The Vietnam war was between 1955 and 1973. The veteran’s names listed on the Vietnam Wall are 58,272 casualities. There were over 150,000 wounded in Vietnam. There are still 51 POW MIA in Indiana. There are 1,934 names of veterans on the memorial wall from Indiana and 8 are women. Over 2.7 million Americans served in Vietnam.
