While polio is a disease of the past in the United States (the last reported case was in 1979) due to Sabin and Salk vaccines, Polio remains a problem in Pakistan and Afghanistan, although cases have been greatly reduced in recent years through the efforts of Rotary International, The Gates Foundation and WHO. There is no effective treatment once the disease is contracted, destroying nerve cells which results in irreversible loss of muscle fibers supplied by those nerves.
Nigeria has celebrated two years without a case of wild polio virus, making Africa wholly polio free. Polio maims, cripples and sometimes kills.
We are close to eliminating Polio, very close.
Do your part and join your waiting shoes to help stamp out polio, this crippler of children and young adults.
