REDUCING POVERTY – VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP

I feel strongly that obtaining education is a large factor in reducing poverty. At the Wayne Township Trustee Office we wish to help empower our clientele, therefore we have partnered with the Fort Wayne Urban League and The Boys and Girls Club to expound the need for continued education. We work with the organizations to pay tribute to students for their success in improving their grades and attendance.

I’d like to provide information on our Wayne Township Trustee Office Recognizing Achievement Scholarship (RAS) Award. I am proud to say that the scholarships are sponsored by individual donations. They will not be funded with taxpayer dollars. This is the second year for the RAS Award. There will be three $500 scholarships awarded to selected students. Awards are given on the basis of financial need, scholastic achievement or improvement, community service, and educational aspirations. Students who are residents of Wayne Township are encouraged to apply.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
Reside in Wayne Township (call 260-449-7000 x328 to verify your address is in Wayne Township); Graduate from a public or private high school by the Spring of 2014; Attend a higher institution of learning in the Fall of 2014; Have a Grade Point Average of 2.0 (C) or better; Maintain a high grade point average or demonstrate improvement in academic studies; Meet income eligibility guidelines.

Applicants are required to submit: Fully completed RAS application form; High School Transcript (obtain from your high school); SAT or ACT test scores; Recommendation letter from a teacher, counselor, coach, or other individual validating your academic improvements (inform your recommender of this process as soon as possible in order to give him or her time to complete the recommendation before the application deadline); One page essay written by applicant (discuss your most significant challenge or accomplishment and its value to you).

Applications may be obtained from a Fort Wayne Community Schools high school, or they can be picked up at our office at 320 E. Superior Street, Fort Wayne IN 46802.

You may also request a RAS Award Packet by sending an e-mail to pbrewer@waynetownship.org. Completed applications must be returned to our office by 4:00 PM on May 13, 2014, to be considered for the award. If you have questions, or would like to make a donation towards the RAS Award, contact our office (260) 449-7000×328.
