HISTORY CENTER ANNOUNCES EVENTS FOR NOVEMBER
Traders Days, a lecture on the Battle of Tippecanoe and the Festival of Gingerbread fill the events calendar for November at the History Center.
Saturday and Sunday, November 2-3, will be Miami Indian Trading Post at the National Historic Chief Richardville House Ahkimi Pinsiwa Awiki, 5705 Bluffton Road. This event is free to the public featuring fine quality hand-made Native American arts and crafts for sale by vendors, along with Medicine Woman Drum singers, IPFW Three Rivers Language Center, Llama’s Bee Pollinators and Soarn’ Hawk.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Beef stew, Indian Fry Bread will be available and cooked on site. Bake sale, Gift baskets, Unique gifts and a silent auction throughout the day.
Among the items for sale will be fine art, gourd work, beading, carved wooden pieces, corn husk dolls, Christmas ornaments, Native American shields, jewelry, clothing, feather work and much more.
Sunday, November 3, Harry Tunnell will deliver the George R. Mather Lecture. “Fighting it out along the Wabash: Harrison, Tecumseh and the Shawnee Prophet” will place the battle into context of American expansion and the War of 1812.
Tunnell is a retired Army officer and military historian who has written “To Compel with Armed Force: A Staff Ride Handbook for the Battle of Tippecanoe”. He recently won an award for research using a geographic information system to visualize how terrain and artificial lighting might have compromised American command and control at the Battle of Tippecanoe.
The lecture is free and open to the public and begins at 2 p.m. at the museum, 302 East Berry, Fort Wayne.
The 28th annual Festival of Gingerbread opens on November 29 and runs until December 15. This Fort Wayne holiday classic features over 100 tasty creations crafted by persons from pre-schoolers to professional chefs.
Tuesday, November 26, a Preview Party Gala will be hosted by the museum from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. On Lighting Night, November 27, admission will be reduced to $2 with a sneak peek of the houses from 5 to 9 p.m. Santa will also be on hand that evening.
In addition to the Festival of Gingerbread, the new permanent exhibition gallery “Allen County Innovation” is open for the public to view. One low admission price provides entry to both the festival and museum with proceeds from the festival going to support of the museum and its collection.
