To My Indian Friend, Dancing Feather
We are so alike
You so tall and straight
I so short and stooped,
You with your medicine bag
I with my cross.
On bended knee
I clasp my hands
And bow my head to pray.
You stand
Feet apart, head flung back
Arms outstretched.
Both praising
And pleading with a God
Who accepts feathers and rosaries.
Both refreshed by His presence
Inspired by His creation.
The smoke from your pipe
And my incense
Mingle and drift up to Him
Who hears and loves us both.
