SWIMMERS COMPETE IN SECTIONALS FEBRUARY 2011The Bishop Luers girls’ swimming and diving team wrapped up their season at the IHSAA Fort Wayne South Sectionals held at South Side High School in the Helen P. Brown Natatorium. Eleven schools in all competed in the finals on Saturday, February 5, 2011.
Homestead’s girls swim team captured a seventh straight sectional title, as the Spartans racked up 433 points enroute to the title. Homestead won nine events over Carroll, which finished with two firsts and a total of 315 points. Bishop Luers placed sixth with 55 points. South Side ninth with Wayne High School finishing 10th.
Girls 1 mtr diving was won by Maddie Zirzow, a junior at Homestead. Luers’ Maria Beck placed 6th and sophomore Casey Baldus placed ninth.
First place sectional winners in each event qualify for the state meet in swimming. First through fourth place sectional participants qualify for the diving regional.
The Boys Swimming Preliminaries will be held on Thursday, February 17 at 5:30pm with Finals on Saturday, February 19. Diving Preliminaries at 9am and swimming/diving finals will begin at 12:30pm on Saturday.
Regardless of the outcome Luers’ coach Jeff Siples said he was very proud of what the team had accomplished this year.
With the swim season concluding, Siples, Luers’ 24-year veteran coach, said he may pass the light of leadership onto another. His announcement will come after the Boys Finals.
