“STORIES FROM THE STREET”
The University of Saint Francis will host “Stories from the Street,” a program by Chicago-based Emmaus Ministries, on Thursday, October 28. Free and open to the public, the performance will be at 6:30 p.m. in Gunderson Auditorium, Achatz Hall, on the University of Saint Francis campus. The acoustic musical performance will consist of songs and storytelling about a group generally considered by society to be outcast and beyond hope – male prostitutes who work and live on the streets of Chicago. Their powerful, poignant stories will be performed by Andi and Al Tauber, a married couple who work at Emmaus Ministries. In addition to their evening performance at the university, the Taubers will visit classes on campus during the day.
Joining the Taubers for the performance will be Nikolas Burkhart, Emmaus Ministries’ artist-in-residence. Burkhart will discuss the communal arts program he is developing at Emmaus. Called “KaioArts,” the program is designed to encourage those served by Emmaus Ministries to express themselves artistically.
Emmaus Ministries was founded 20 years ago as a volunteer outreach and support network to young adult men working as prostitutes in Chicago. Andi and Al Tauber are a musical duo who have been writing and performing in the singer/songwriter circuit as “Andi and I” for more than 12 years. Andi has worked for Emmaus Ministries since 1999; Al joined in 2004 to develop the “Stories from the Streets” program with her. In addition to taking “Stories from the Street” on the road, both Andi and Al work shifts at Emmaus Ministries and serve as outreach volunteers in Chicago’s night community.
