MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

CITY’S WEED ENFORCEMENT

NOW UNDERWAY

Mayor’s Senior Advisory Council holding free workshop May 18

To keep neighborhoods healthy and vital, the City of Fort Wayne’s Neighborhood Code Enforcement department has started enforcing weed and tall-grass violations. The department is also accepting weed complaints from the public.

The weed violation process includes the posting of a notice in the cited yard plus a letter sent by the City to the owner of record. Property owners then have five days to correct the violation. If the grass or weeds are not removed after that time, the City’s mowing contractor will cut the lawn, and the owner will be charged.

Grass must be at 9 inches tall to be in violation of the City’s ordinance.

This year, the City has six seasonal, part-time employees dedicated to weed violations. They inspect complaints and proactively identify violations. Five days after the initial posting, the mowing contractors check if property owners are in compliance and if not, mow the yard and take date-stamped before and after photos.

A well-maintained property is a sign of a healthy neighborhood. We count on our owners to do their part. But when the need is there, the City’s weed enforcement program plays an important role in protecting property values and keeping Fort Wayne an attractive and vibrant city.

Residents can report complaints to 311 or 427-8311, One Call to City Hall, or by clicking on the 311 logo on the City’s webpage at www.cityoffortwayne.org. Individuals reporting a violation will need to have the property’s street address or specific location.

Free workshop for seniors about medication management, estate planning

I would also like to invite Fort Wayne seniors and their family members to attend the second annual Mayor’s Senior Advisory Council workshop 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 18. The free session will cover medication management and the financial components of estate planning. No RSVP is needed, but for more information, call the Mayor’s Public Information office at 427-1120.

The workshop will be in the Omni Room of the City-County Building. Free parking is available in the attached parking garage.

The presenters will be Scott Kincaid, a senior-care pharmacist with Select Specialty Hospital, and MSAC member Stephen Adair, an attorney with Beers, Mallers, Backs & Salin, LLP whose practice is dedicated to elder law. Other advisory council members will also be there to answer questions.

Managing medication and understanding the complexities of financial planning are critical topics for many Fort Wayne seniors. The presenters at this workshop are knowledgeable and eager to share their expertise. My thanks to the Senior Advisory Council for helping residents gain access to this vital information. The Council is a valuable resource to our community.
