STUDENT WINNERS ANNOUNCED IN BRAIN GAIN IDEA CONTEST

Three Fort Wayne-area high school students were honored at an awards luncheon for a Brain Gain Idea Contest in celebration of National Entrepreneurship Week, which ran from February 24 to March 3. The awards luncheon took place at Anthis Career Center’s Barr Street Café with cash awards furnished by the Greater Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

Receiving the first-place award was Neil Kelty, a student at Carroll High School who submitted an idea for a “Trizon NoteView,” which combines an LCD projector with a laptop computer for ease in making PowerPoint presentations. He received a $500 cash award for his first-place finish.

The second-place award went to Melvin Bradley, a student from South Side High School who also attends the Anthis Career Center. Bradley’s idea is a swipe-card theft-prevention system for automobiles that would be activated with a driver’s license to ensure that the person engaging the vehicle is an authorized driver. He won $250 for his second-place efforts.

The third-place winner was Miranda Murphy, an Elmhurst High School student who also attends the Anthis Career Center. Her idea is an alarm system for car seats that would be activated if a child’s seatbelt came undone or the car seat’s straps were unfastened. Murphy received a $100 award for placing third.

Other students participating in the Brain Gain Idea Contest, and their home schools, were Megan Hirschy, Ryan Perschke and Bojan Petreski, all from Homestead High School; Esther Krinn from Snider High School; Richard Larioza-Keahi, Clifton McPherson and Doreen Ramirez, all from North Side High School; Emily Sharp from Wayne High School; and Carly Votaw from Northrop High School. All of the participating students except those from Homestead and Carroll High Schools represented the Anthis Career Center in the contest.

The Brain Gain Idea Contest was organized by representatives of the Anthis Career Center, Homestead High School, the University of Saint Francis, IPFW, Junior Achievement of Northeast Indiana, and the Northeast Indiana Innovation Center, in cooperation with high school teachers in Allen County. The purpose of the contest was to generate excitement and enthusiasm about the economic and educational value of the entrepreneurial spirit in Northeast Indiana.

Judging for the contest was completed by business leaders from the Greater Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce and other organizations based on creativity, originality, product appeal, and how the idea was marketed and presented.
