COLD WEATHER SAFETY TIPS
Here are some cold-weather safety tips that may be helpful considering the upcoming potential snowfall.
Julie Welch, MD, an emergency medicine doctor at Methodist Hospital, offers these seven prevention tips:
1) Don’t shovel your own snow if you are over the age of 50 and have health problems.
2) Lay down salt on walkways.
3) Don’t walk on surfaces that appear to be slippery. Walk in the grass or on gravel when possible.
4) Wear flat bottomed, rubber footwear instead of high heels or dress shoes.
5) Use available handrails on stairs and walkways.
6) Wear dry clothes. Wet clothes and cold temperatures can lead to frostbite. If your socks or clothes get wet, you should immediately change and put on dry socks and clothing.
7) If you can, donate underwear, socks, boots, shoes, hats, and gloves to a local service that gives such items to the homeless. In our emergency room, we have seen plenty of homeless individuals who end up losing their fingers and toes to frostbite because they wore wet clothes and socks.
