AT THE MOVIES WITH KASEY BUTCHER

As great as first dates are, I don’t think I’d want to relive one over and over again. There’s the whole butterfly in the stomach thing, the shyness and awkwardness. Then there’s the age-old question of whether or not it is appropriate to kiss on the first date. A first date is something to go through once and laugh about many times. In 50 First Dates, however, Adam Sandler (Punch Drunk Love) goes on a whole lot of first dates, and he’s not laughing at all.

In the movie, Sandler plays Henry Roth, a bachelor with no plans to “settle down” until the day he spots Lucy (Drew Barrymore, Charlie’s Angels). Henry and Lucy have a great day together, but the next day she has no idea who he is. Lucy was involved in an accident that caused her to lose her short-term memory. She lives the same day over and over again. Henry is still determined, however, to have a relationship with Lucy so everyday he makes her fall in love with him.

Overall, I think this movie was pretty good. It is actually leaning towards the mature side of Sandler’s work. The story is told in a Groundhog Day-esq fashion, which can come off slightly repetitive, but still funny.

This movie is infinitely more clever than Sandler’s early work. It actually uses allusions to other movies and cracked me up without making me feel stupid.

The acting is okay. Sandler is good. He pretty much carries the entire movie. Barrymore isn’t that great, she comes off as annoying and I found myself wondering why she was worth the trouble Henry goes through. Like every other Adam Sandler movie, 50 First Dates is scattered with random but hilarious characters played by Sandler’s friends. They always make the movies a lot more enjoyable and this time is no different.

This movie takes place in Hawaii. Since the weather is generally nasty in the “F-Dub” during February, it was refreshing to see the beach and blue skies. It added a little something extra to see fields of green grass and vast amounts of crystal water. It also allowed for the main character to be a marine biologist, which added animal humor to the story.

I rate this movie a three out of five, because it is a decent movie that made me laugh, even if it wasn’t the best work of anyone involved.
