COUNCILMAN’S CORNER
As you know, Sunday, November 11th is Veterans Day. This day is certainly all the more important this year due to the recent attack on our nation as well as the war against terrorists both at home and abroad. A special event is scheduled for November 11th and you are invited! Several veterans and veterans groups will conduct a special ceremony dedicated to all of the military personnel who died or were injured in the Pentagon attack on September 11, 2001. The ceremony is scheduled for 11am on Sunday, November 11th at Freimann Square in downtown Fort Wayne. Please bring a friend or relative and honor our vets and all of the 9-11-01 Pentagon victims!
On Monday, October 29th there was a large turnout of concerned citizens from throughout the “Waynedale News” area at the community center near Scott’s. Ted Rhinehart, Public Works Director, his assistant, Ken Nicolet, and also, City Traffic Engineering experts, George Cook and Steve Davis attended a meeting chaired by Beulah Stoker of the SouthEast Waynedale Association. They gave the results of traffic study done at the Bluffton Road-Lower Huntington Road intersection and listened to area residents’ suggestions for improvements. They did not commit to the new traffic signals that I favor but agreed to review the matter and report back to the citizens by early January 2002. The engineers know my wishes and the requests of hundreds of local citizens and businesses and I remain optimistic that a good solution will be found.
At the request of another Councilman and myself, City Council members are receiving briefings on local security measures from County Emergency Preparedness Authorities. I’m determined to continue to emphasize safeguards for Fort Wayne citizens to protect us from terrorists whether they be Timothy McVeighs or religious fanatics. I’ve always believed in that Scout motto since I was a Cub Scout—”Be Prepared.”
As you are probably aware, Councilman Tom Henry has introduced an ordinance making it illegal to discriminate against any citizen based on sexual orientation. Due to the fact that state law would render the ordinance unenforceable I’ll likely vote for a resolution (not a new law) which makes a strong statement against such discrimination.
Finally, to the residents of the Lake Shores area: I’ve asked the police department to focus on the Lake Shores neighborhood due to recent vandalism and some thefts. Be sure to call 911 for any suspicious activity and keep your cars and homes locked and secured. I’m focusing very strongly on safety in Lake Shores!
