SCOUTING SMOKE SIGNALS
I have often been asked, “Just what is/are the Boy Scouts? What do they do? Why should my child be involved? Do I have to get involved? I invite any and all people to visit a local Scout troop meeting and see what Scouting is all about. Call Anthony Wayne Area Council for information about a Boy Scout Troop (boys from 11 to 18 yrs) or Cub Scout Pack (boys from 8 to 11yrs)near you.
THE MISSION OF THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical choices over their lifetime by instilling in them values of the Scout Oath and Law.
SCOUT OATH
On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law, to help other people at all times, to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.
SCOUT LAW
A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.
SCOUT VESPERS
Silently falls the light of day,
As the campfire fades away;
Silently each Scout should ask,
Have I done my daily task?
Have I kept my honor bright,
Can I guiltless sleep tonight?
IN THE FUTURE, SCOUTING WILL CONTINUE TO:
*Offer young people responsible fun and adventure.
*Instill lifetime values and develop ethical character.
*Train young people in citizenship, service, and leadership.
*Serve America’s communities and families through quality programming.
TAKE TIME TO SMELL THE CAMPFIRE
In the year 2002, the Boy Scouts of America will celebrate its 92nd Anniversary. It is a time when all of us who grew up in Scouting should pause and remember the smell of the campfire’s smoke. It is a time when we should look back at the fun, adventure, and excitement felt by the 100 million youth and adults who traveled Scouting’s trails from 1910 to today and gained character from the experience.
It is a time when we should stand tall and take pride in our great heritage: the Eagle Scout who became President; another who was the first to walk on the moon, the thousands who have taken the reigns of leadership throughout the nation. Just as important are the millions who gained a guide for living the Scout Oath and Law and who put both into practice as heads of household and participating citizens of our country.
It is time to take pride in the past, but not get lost in it. It is a time to smell the campfire’s smoke and from it accept the challenges of an even greater future. We must set the course and equip the next generation with strong values of Scouting that will enable them to be strong leaders of their families, communities, and the nation.
Programs like Scouting will change to become relevant to the times, but their values will not. Youth will yearn for adventure, as they always have, and the Boy Scouts of America will meet that challenge with imagination and enthusiasm as we travel through a new millennium.
Happy trails to the Boy Scouts of America! On your journey into the next millennium, may your trails be truly toward God and country and guided every step of the way by the Scout Law.
