THAT’S THE WAY I SAW IT
HE WANTED TO WIN THEM ALL
The book titled, Red Smith on Baseball, brings out the attitude of the New York Yankees and Manager Joe McCarthy in 1937.
The Yankees lost two games to the Tigers early in the season and McCarthy chewed them out.
Roy Johnson, a former Yankee outfielder and former batter for the Red Sox (1933-1935) stated, “That guy wants to win them all!” (Which was not intended for McCarthy to hear.) McCarthy wanted to win so badly he called Tommy Henrich up from Newark because he heard he was hitting .440 in seven games. Ironically, Roy Johnson played only 12 games for the Yankees and was later shipped to the Boston Braves.
Unfortunately, the Yankees didn’t win them all in 1937 but they finished first (102-52) and 13 games ahead of the Tigers. And again, they didn’t win them all in the World Series as the Giants beat them 7-3 in game four of a five-game series.
This was one of baseball’s greatest teams. It would have been great to see some of their games in action, but that was left up to the fans in 1937.
And that’s the way Red Smith saw it.
