Waynedale Political Commentaries

COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

As you are probably aware there is a major emphasis on expanding and improving the Greenway System. This system of walk/run and bicycle paths started out as the “River Greenway System” 20 years ago but has long since expanded well beyond our rivers. Within a couple of years it will be possible to ride a bicycle from the Aboite area or Waynedale downtown and then to Huntertown or New Haven. Whether you are on a bike or on foot be sure to take advantage of this great feature of our community. These greenways are a hidden treasure of Fort Wayne. And don’t forget—when you bicycle or walk to the park or to the grocery you don’t use a single drop of that $3.00 a gallon gasoline!

Solid progress is being made at a fine private facility, the old Tacumwah soccer and softball site. A nonprofit group known as the Academy for Sports and Health (ASH) has purchased Tacumwah and has the goal of making the space available for a variety of amateur sports groups and events. Eventually a section of the greenway system will probably wind its way south from Rockhill Park through this area to connect with the so-called “towpath trail” section of the greenway. Keep an eye on this area!

Fort Wayne’s annual “Great American Cleanup” is scheduled for Saturday, May 19th. Many neighborhood groups are joining together for our city’s annual “spring cleanup”. Check with your neighborhood leadership to see if your area is participating in the cleanup. Call 427-1270 for further information.

Call me or send an email with any suggestions for how we can make our city an even better place to live!
