DOWNTOWN RIVERFRONT, A SOURCE OF PRIDE FOR ALL – Message From The Mayor

Riverfront Fort Wayne and the Allen County Public Library have kicked off a weekly summer family Storytime on the Bridge.

Storytime on the Bridge offers kids of all ages songs, great stories and lots of smiles on the Historic Wells Street Bridge. Story time begins each Monday at 10:30 a.m. and lasts until 11 a.m. Families are encouraged to bring their own blankets or chairs.

If the weather is stormy or rain is threatening, story time will be held in the Children’s Services Department at the Main Library downtown. There will be no story time on July 4. Storytime on the Bridge is free and open to the public and will continue through August 29.

Riverfront Fort Wayne hosts regular programs and events as part of a three-part effort to build support for revitalizing the downtown riverfront. Programming, maintenance and development are all part of efforts to create a downtown riverfront that is a regional destination and source of pride for all of northeast Indiana. Partners in Riverfront Fort Wayne include the City of Fort Wayne, the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne and the Capital Improvement Board. I also wanted to share with you that the Indiana Michigan Power Center in downtown Fort Wayne will be the location for this year’s Fourth of July fireworks show on Monday, July 4.

Lutheran Health Network and Old National Bank will again serve as financial sponsors for the fireworks display.

The Fort Wayne TinCaps will be hosting a baseball game that evening beginning at 6:35 p.m. Individuals with tickets to that evening’s game will be able to enjoy the fireworks from their seats at the ballpark.

The fireworks show is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. If the TinCaps game is not completed by 10 p.m., the fireworks will begin immediately following the conclusion of the game.

The City of Fort Wayne would like to thank Bill Bean and Indiana Michigan Power for partnering with the City on the use of the Indiana Michigan Power Center building. The City would also like to recognize Three Rivers Festival officials for allowing a fireworks display in downtown so close to the Three Rivers Festival fireworks show in mid-July.

We’re committed to the well-being of young people in our City. The Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department has expanded its free meals to youth ages 5-18 through the Department’s weekday summer programming.

Breakfast is now served at four additional playground sites: Hamilton, Lafayette, Lakeside and Packard parks.

Breakfast, lunch and a snack have been provided at Jennings, Cooper and Weisser community centers and Memorial Park for over 20 years.

McMillen Park Community Center was added to the list when it opened in 2014.

The Parks & Recreation Department partners with Community Harvest Food Bank to provide breakfast in the summer, as well as meals throughout the school year and partners with Fort Wayne Community Schools to provide lunches and snacks at all nine sites throughout the summer.

While the Parks Department promotes the recreational and educational components at their safe haven sites, a nutritional component is another way to provide a positive atmosphere for young people, as well as an opportunity to strengthen social skills as the kids dine together in a family-like atmosphere.
