WAYNEDALE NATIVE GOES PRO
Steven D. Thurber, 26, a 6’1” guard, signed with the Indiana Dream, a semi-pro basketball team located in Muncie, Indiana. Steven will be the starting guard for the 2016 Dream. Steven’s fiancée, Selina and his 3 children, Tori, 5; Tina, 2; and Steven Jr., 9 months, mean so much to him. Steven says, “I have it all…basketball and family, I couldn’t ask for more.”
Born and raised in Waynedale, Steven played basketball at Indian Village Elementary School, Kekionga Middle School, Elmhurst and Butler Eastside High Schools. Steven’s mother passed away when he was 12. He dropped out of basketball.
Steven’s grandparents took him in, as his father was not in the picture. In and out of trouble until he was 15, he was sent to live with his aunt and uncle in Spencerville, Indiana. It was then that Steven got his priorities in line and graduated from high school.
Joining the Indiana Dream, Steven hopes to help the team win championships in the EBL (Elite Basketball League. www.eblleague.com) and MBL (Midwest Basketball League. www.officialmbl.com). His Head Coach and owner of the Indiana Dream is Steve L. Smith who holds 13 records at the University of St. Francis, Fort Wayne. This makes Steven even more honored to be playing for the “Dream.”
Steven counts it a real honor to be playing next to some great college ball players. He looks forward to the possibility of bringing championships back to Muncie. He feels that he was grounded well from his early days in Waynedale and Spencerville. He wants others to know that you always need to persevere no matter what life does to keep you from your goals. Steven resounds, “Actually, listening and paying attention to detail is the key! Never give up on your dream.”
