WW II CAKE

Many sacrifices were made during WWII and from the sacrifices came recipes that saved on food that was needed to help our troops. One of the recipes that I’ve come across is simple and looks like it would be something even I could put together and enjoy eating.

2 cups brown sugar

5 tbsp. shortening

2 tsp. salt

2 cups hot water

2 cups raisins

2 tsp. cloves

2 tsp. baking soda

1 tbsp. warm water

3 cups flour

Put first six ingredients in a saucepan and boil for 5 minutes. Cool to lukewarm. Dissolve the baking soda in the warm water and add to the flour. Mix all together. Pour batter into an angel food cake pan and bake at 325 degrees for about one hour. Cool completely and wrap in aluminum foil. This cake tastes better the next day and it freezes well.
