FIRST NEW HAVEN HEALTH FAIR

The first ever New Haven Health Fair will be held Wednesday, April 10 at the New Haven Community Center, 7500 SR 930 East behind McDonalds, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Theme of the event is “The Healthier You”.

Speakers will be addressing a wide variety of health subjects and issues throughout the day including mental health, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and healthy eating.

In addition, Amber Fiess will cover Medicare 101, Darlene Degener will present healthy gardening tips and ergonomic tricks and Marshall Phillips will explain first steps to VA benefits. Dr. Deb McMahan from the Department of Health will discuss opioids and New Haven Police Chief Henry McKinnon will talk about the drug drop-off program. A representative from Tobacco Free Allen County will discuss smoking cessation and there will also be a session on “How to Not Let the Bed Bugs Bite”.

Attendees will have the opportunity to get a body mass screening provided by Curves of New Haven. The Department of Health will offer mental health screenings and Francine’s Friends Mobile Mammography will be set up to administer mammography. Persons interested should call 260-483-1847 for an appointment.

According to Charles Hatten, president and CEO of the New Haven Chamber of Commerce, the idea for the health fair originated with Adams Township Trustee Denita Washington. “She was concerned about finding ways to assist area residents to be able to enjoy a healthier lifestyle. So we decided a good way to promote health awareness would be to sponsor a health fair with plenty of expert advice and a lot of free stuff.

“The response has been overwhelming,” said Hatten, “and we even had to turn down a few vendors. Because of that, we’re considering moving the date to May next year so we can take advantage of better weather and move some of the activities outside. We’re also thinking of doing other health related activities throughout the year,” he added.

A total of 37 vendors will have booths displaying a variety products and information ranging from quitting smoking, hearing aids and physical therapy to senior living facilities, credit unions and chiropractic services.

The Health Fair is being sponsored by the New Haven Chamber of Commerce, the Adams Township Trustee and the New Haven Parks and Recreation Department. For more information, contact the New Haven Chamber at 749-4484 or check out their website at www.newhavenindiana.org
