RAS AWARDS – VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP
In an earlier publication of The Waynedale News, I spoke about the Wayne Township Trustee Office’s Recognizing Achievement Scholarship (RAS) Award. We partnered with the Fort Wayne Urban League to recognize the achievements of young people, paying tribute to students for their success in improving their grades and attendance. The Wayne Township Trustee Office RAS Awards are sponsored by individual donations, not with taxpayer dollars. This is our second year for providing scholarships to selected students. RAS Awards are given on the basis of financial need, scholastic achievement or improvement, community service, and educational aspirations to students who are residents of Wayne Township. Selected recipients maintained a high grade point average or demonstrated improvement in academic studies. We’d like to give special thanks to Fort Wayne Community Schools for their help in distributing RAS Award applications to students.
The deserving recipients of this year’s awards are Keiona Waller from Wayne High School, Karris Sims from North Side High School, Kalsouma Idriss from North Side High School and Neisha Freshley from Wayne High School. Award certificates were presented to the students by Wayne Township Trustee Richard A. Stevenson, Sr. and Wayne Township Trustee Office Board Member Tony Henry, at Turner Chapel AME Church located at 836 E. Jefferson Blvd, on May 27, 2014. Fort Wayne Urban League’s Director of Youth Services, JJ Foster, presented a great program hosted by Eryn Rogers of WANE TV, with George Guy of the Fort Wayne Housing Authority as the main speaker.
Congratulations to Keiona, Karris, Kalsouma, and Neisha, who are all striving for great things!
