WHEN YOU NEED US – WE ARE THERE

Life is a journey. A baby is born, the parents and grandparents are delighted and begin that wonderful part of their life of watching this beautiful little one begin their life. The next big journey is the baby begins school and finally graduates from college and then begins a career, is married and the beginning of life for this family will begin again. However, the life’s journey for our first baby in this article continues. Career, family, retirement and then we begin to witness many changes for our first born baby.

The end of life’s journey usually catches up with each of us and we are surprised. We wonder where the time went, when did my children become men and women of the world and we begin to watch life’s beginning from our children as they begin watching also.

Our children are beginning to witness the end of life’s journey for their mother and father. This is not something we are usually prepared for. Perhaps we are financially, but are our children prepared to lose their parents? Are you prepared for the journey that you will be taking?

Hospice is a medical service that has become very valuable to the patient in need of this service as well as their family. This time in our journey is difficult and everyone needs some reassurance, assistance, a shoulder to rely upon and the reassurance that the person caring for them and their family will be with them during this entire journey.

This is what hospice is all about. Hospice provides service to the patient in their place of residence, which could be their home, an inpatient setting or a free-standing in-house hospice.

Hospice provides an entire team that assists the patient and their family during this most difficult time. We provide nursing care as well as spiritual and psycho-social services to the patient and their family.

Our government has also recognized the value of this program and provides funding of all services related to the hospice diagnosis. This alone lifts a huge burden from the patient and the family. The government also allows for thirteen months of support to the family after their loved one is no longer with them.

As a health professional working on a hospice team, I can think of no greater privilege than to work with our patients and their families during this time in their lives. Every day is a blessing given to our patients and to us.
