WAYNEDALE WELCOMES BURMESE STUDENTS

Mr. Brent Holinger spent Monday December 15, 2008 providing free haircuts to the Thai and Burmese students at Waynedale Elementary School. Waynedale added an ELL (English Language Learner) program at the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year.

The majority of the students who received a free haircut have been in the United States for a year or less. Not one of these students has ever had a professional haircut in their lives. The boys and girls sat very still and quiet. Some of the students were too shy to speak, yet most of them were encouraged to use some of the English language they have been learning, and one such phrase being, “thank you.”

Brent volunteered his time on his day off. He is a stylist at Diplomat Sty-lon at 5734 Wilkie Dr. in Fort Wayne. He said regarding the students, “These are the best models I’ve ever had.” Brent seemed to really enjoy his time with the kids, and by the end of the day the ELL teacher could hear him talking with the students.

The students, principal, ELL teacher, and classroom teachers are so grateful for Brent being so willing to spend an entire day giving to others. Waynedale has been very blessed with many people from the community volunteering gifts, talents, and time; Brent is another great addition to Waynedale! Thank you, Brent Holsinger!
