AT THE MOVIES WITH HALEY ZIMMERMAN

Mr. Bean is brought to the big screen once more in Mr. Bean’s Holiday, a truly innocent family comedy. Rowan Atkinson brings his famous on-screen personality to life with his incessant (and sometimes amusing) oddities.

After winning a trip to Cannes, Mr. Bean embarks on a holiday filled with wacky events that only he could trigger. When he accidentally separates a boy from his father at a train station, Bean does everything he can to reunite the pair. Traveling across the French countryside, the bumbling and shockingly clumsy Englishman and young Russian boy cross their language barriers and become friends.

When he somehow gets separated from the boy, Bean stumbles upon a movie set and finds himself falling in love with a beautiful French actress and getting yelled at by a viciously ambitious American director portrayed by actor Willem Dafoe.
A common complaint of the movie is that it is really no different than an extended episode of the TV show, which seems to be a common theme amongst this summer’s TV-to-movie films (see The Simpsons Movie). The first hour of the film is just plain boring with minimal dialogue, especially from Bean himself. While most of the movie is uneventful and a little slow, there are a couple of scenes that are genuinely funny. Situational and physical humor are the main comedic highlights in this film, proving that vulgarity and nonstop action sequences aren’t absolutely necessary to produce a somewhat enjoyable movie these days.

One thing that raises the bar of the film just a tad is the excellent cinematography. Working with the beautiful French landscape, director Steve Bendelack made wonderful use of bright color schemes and creative camerawork. So, if you find yourself getting bored with the plot, just take a step back and look at the screen, what you will see is really quite breathtaking.

Fans of Mr. Bean will most likely enjoy this film with no questions asked, but those unfamiliar to this unique form of comedy might need some time to get used to its own brand of quirkiness.
