TRAVELING JOURNAL IN A 1916 MODEL T

Editors note: Dave Trainer brought in this story, which was written by his uncle, Haldane W. Bean. It is about a father and his three sons who traveled from southern Illinois to Yellowstone driving a 1916 Model T. Dave is the son of Dean Trainer, who started Trainer’s Shell Service Station on the corner of Lower Huntington and Bluffton Roads in 1949. Part II.

Sunday was spent overhauling the Model T. Monday morning we hit the Custer Battlefield Highway and headed west. We crossed the Missouri River on a ferryboat and soon reached the Bad Lands of South Dakota. Here was God’s country. No one else would have it. No roads, no maps, no nothing but Bad Lands. We finally arrived at he Black Hills and saw some different scenery. The hills looked like mountains but they were called hills and who were we to argue. We saw where John Gutzon Borglum was carving the statues of presidents in the rocks of Mount Rushmore. George Washington was alone. The others were yet to come. It didn’t take us long to see all we wanted to see in the Hills. Someone suggested Yellowstone Park so that became our next goal.

We left Rapid City and went to spear fish. We were soon in Wyoming. We needed to have the brakes relined in Sundance, Wyoming. Just south of the town was Sundance Mountain with an elevation of 4,750 feet. It looked like a good mountain to climb so we made an effort. We didn’t get to the top but we saw Sundance Mountain. A few days later we saw another mountain when we were getting the car repaired again. This time we decided to climb to the top. But before we started to walk we asked someone how far it was to the base of the mountain. The answer was seven miles. We weren’t that anxious to climb this mountain. Devil’s Tower was seen on the far right but we merely watched it as we went by. We decided it was too far away.
