SCOUTING SMOKE SIGNALS

LOCAL LEADERS RECOGNIZED

There are just about two –thousand volunteer individuals in the immediate area that help implement the BSA program. It takes a lot of time, effort, and planning to make things happen and we couldn’t even come close if it were entirely up to paid professionals. Our professional staff is absolutely great, but they are far too few and spread far to thin.

The Waynedale area should be quite proud of the amount of participation that we enjoy from our local volunteers. Recently there were both a District and a Council Recognition Dinner held to honor the volunteers, and the Waynedale area was very well represented.

Bob Rainwaters, Scoutmaster of Troop #344, from Waynedale United Methodist Church was named “Scoutmaster of the Year”. That is just one large honor for countless hours representing years of service to our area youth.

Chris Seplak, also from Waynedale United Methodist, was awarded the “Silver Beaver Award”. Scouters know that the Silver Beaver represents the top national award that is presented quite frugally to a very small cadre of our volunteer membership. It is indeed the honor of a lifetime that most Scouters can only dream about.

In addition, Scouters Bob Koehl (Troop #344), Jerry Lloyd and Jim Fox (Troop #38 at Calvary United Methodist) all received Council Patches in appreciation of their efforts. Bob had been Cub Scout Day Camp Director for several years in addition to his involvement with Pack #3344. Both Jerry and Jim have been around so long that I am not even sure exactly where they belong; but in addition to District and Council involvement they also organize “lock-ins” at the Southeast YMCA with the pool available for aquatic advancements and the whole facility open for just plain fun.

These are just the folks that come to mind readily. Although my neighbor just lit a large fire in his backyard and reminded me that I haven’t even mentioned Bill Lamb. There is a reason that Bill’s mantra is “Fire is Good”. You may want to ask him about that yourselves, and while you are at it, please do not forget to ask him to explain what a “backer” is.

Also bear in mind that for each of the folks that I mentioned, there must be at least ten more backing them up to carry off the program. We will get around to further recognition and acknowledgement as time and space permit. But with the summer season at Camp Chief Little Turtle opening up and with Cub Scout Day and Resident Camp just around the corner it is time for parents to make certain that their children are aware of the tremendous fun waiting for them with these activities. Many leaders will provide the absolute best time that they can for these Scouts.

Our Appreciating, Salutes, and Thanks to all of our Scouting Leadership; without whose effort these programs could not happen. Way to go, folks! The Waynedale area is very lucky to have you and your time and efforts.
