THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE

When I was young living on Old Trail Road, my dad used to sing and play his guitar to us in the evening. One song that is in my mind today is: The Best Things in Life are Free. I am in northern Indiana at our rough and tumble lake cottage. I was sitting out on the boat watching the sky, awaiting the predicted storm. I love storms. There is no such thing as bad weather. I prefer storms to hot sunny days. They are exciting and wonderful. The changing sky is amazing. I have taught all my grandchildren to love storms too. We turn off all the lights, after having made a couple of big bowls of popcorn, and watch the storm come in. ‑

When I lived in Waynedale, before the Waynedale Park was a park, and it was just a glorious wood, with wildflowers and trees and all sorts of things to discover, I used to lie in the grass and watch the sky. The droning of an airplane would sound like a lullaby. Now, many years since Dad’s death, I know exactly what he was talking about when he taught us what was important. All you have to do to be rich is to keep your eyes open, and behold nature’s jewels. At night you can look up and see a million diamonds in the sky. The green grass beneath your body is of emeralds. I love to watch when the huge cumulus clouds let sunlight streak through like ladders to heaven. I bet if you tried you could climb right up to heaven. The sunsets are glorious on many an evening and if you are incredibly lucky you will see the green flash at sunset. I have only seen this in cloud books. I hope to see this phenomenon before I die.

The swallows are busy feeding their young, and the geese have a family of goslings following after them. ‑The Blue and the Green Herons make their presence known along the shore and in the sky. How lucky I am. How lucky you are. We have more than money could possibly buy. The most expensive painting is motionless. The sky is not. The sky is constantly moving and changing. Money is of so little importance at this time of my life, that I have come to think of it as a distraction from the things that are beautiful and real. What a painful mistake it would be to lose direction, focus on money, and ignore what is freely here for us all.

Take a walk tonight and look up at the stars. See what phase of the moon we are in. Breathe deeply and live the scent of the night. Behold all that is of beauty. Keep in mind that there is much that is given. ‑No purchase necessary.

Lovingly,

Mae
