What Happened to Service?

Dear Readers,

In my last column I was ranting and raving about the pitiful service you get in stores. My focus was primarily shoe stores. I thought no place existed like the old Lewis’ Shoe Store in Waynedale in the 50’s. I decided that those times are just gone.

Then, lo and behold, one of our readers by the name of Diana Scott cleared the way by calling The Waynedale News and telling our editor about a shoe store that had the old ethics and great service. It is a shoe store on the North side of town by the name of Toenges Shoes. I swear, if I had had any idea such an excellent place existed I might have been tempted to take Clay back to Indiana just to go to Toenges Shoes. As it was, if you remember, I bought his shoes at Galeons in Louisville. The whole wall of the shoe section was filled with shoes from top to bottom, but the young lone salesman didn’t know the difference between running shoes, track shoes, or basketball shoes. Anyway, as I told you, Clay pointed out the track shoes, and the salesman brought out some in his size and tossed them on the chair beside Clay. He never reappeared. Don’t think I let that snub pass without notice! ‑As it turned out, though, Clay wore his new track shoes in his latest race which was a sprint of 100 meters. He had just had a cast put on his arm two days prior. He broke it riding his bike down a flight of steps. I’m glad I wasn’t there to hear the sickening crack! The track coach didn’t think it too well advised to let him run with a cast, but Clay pleaded his case. ‑So Clay ran the race and came in second. He was convinced if it were not for the weight of the cast he might have come in first. Oh, but for a camera just at that crucial moment in time, just as he crossed the finish line, and his track shorts dropped to his feet. I told him they needed a couple of tucks! ‑But did he listen? ‑Nope. So he lost his shorts in front of a whole bunch of people. Now they have tucks!

I plan to go visit Toenges Shoe Store the next time I am in Fort Wayne, as I would love to experience the kindly attention they give to customers. And I thought there was nowhere left, expensive or not, that would treat customers like the old Lewis Shoe Store. Now, I find that there is one just as wonderful. You can bet the next shoes I buy will be when I come home, again. I plan to go into Toenges and pretend I’m back in the 50’s again. I’m glad to know such a place exists, and thank you to Diana Scott for calling in the tip! ‑

Love to my Waynedale friends,

Mae
