SMOKE ON THE WIND
A FEATHER FOR TIM
My son-in-law celebrated his 41st birthday a few months ago. He is in the Cortland Nursing Home in Fort Wayne. He has MS and is in a wheel chair.
I asked Tim what he would like for his birthday. He replied, “A feather from the feather man.” That is what he calls me. Tim got his feather. The staff and I sang happy birthday to him and Tim and I had a good visit.
Following are my thoughts about a Feather for Tim. Among Native people, an eagle feather received as an honor gift is a prized possession, a cherished thing one is blessed with. It represents that the person given the feather walks in a good way upon Mother Earth. Tim cannot walk, but when he looks at the feather presented to him, he knows that it represents the love and light of God – The Creator – and the love and respect we have for one another.
Tim has taught me how precious life can be, and with his positive attitude and big smile, he has shown me that in the circle of life he dances with the Holy Spirit.
