JULIA’S PET CORNER
Spring is always a good time to get your pet’s yearly check up. Many diseases can be prevented by good routine care.
Dogs should be vaccinated and checked for intestinal and heart worms. I have already seen mosquitoes this year so preventing heartworm disease should be a priority in every dog owner’s life. Many heartworm preventatives also prevent intestinal worm infestations and provide some flea protection although I’m not impressed with the flea protection it provides. It is my understanding the fleas in this product are merely sterilized not killed with the heartworm preventative. The owner then has to use another product to kill any fleas the dog is carrying around with him. I feel the only good flea is a dead flea. I prefer to use a flea product that kills the flea the first time it bites my pet. You should ask your veterinarian what his advice is.
Your dog may have put on a few extra pounds over the winter. Before starting on a long walk make sure your dog is up to it. Check the dog’s toenails. If they are starting to curl under or turn to the side they are in need of a trim. Your dog’s nails grow continuously just like our fingernails. If a once a year trim is not enough for you, it won’t be enough for your dog either.
Dogs and cats start shedding out their winter coat. A groomer can put your pet’s bad hair days behind him.
