JULIA’S PET CORNER

I often see “backyard dogs”. Dogs who for one reason or another spend most or all of their lives tied to a doghouse or locked in a fenced in area. “What enjoyment do people get from having a “backyard dog?” Dogs are highly social and loving, so I wonder, “What went wrong in this poor creature’s life to get him pushed out of the home and into the yard”? Maybe they chose a puppy based on cute rather than practical. Cute could be a 130 pound St. Bernard or a 20 pound Shih Tzu. The commitment is obviously quite different for each of these puppies. Shih Tzus and most other breeds have been bred to be inside dogs and have no ability to survive the climate changes we have in this area. The St. Bernard, as well as other heavily coated breeds, can survive outdoors if they have a properly insulated doghouse of the appropriate size with plenty of warm, dry bedding. Snow is not an acceptable substitute for water. This brings me back to my original question. “What enjoyment do people get from a backyard dog?” Inside dogs spend their entire day anticipating your return from work so they can show you their love and devotion. I wonder, after outside dogs are fed and watered what is their purpose? Dogs give so much more love than they could ever receive. I wish the people with “backyard dogs” would realize how much better their lives could be if they invited their dog to be an integral part of their family.
