A BYTE OF KNOWLEDGE

If you’re a web-designer or someone who wants to design websites there are a few cool links and ideas to get you started with your website design.

A couple pointers in designing a site are to get a piece of paper, and a computer. The paper is for you to start writing down what you want on your website. Not too detailed. But a simple list of pages you want to design and what their purpose is.

Next you need to draw a flow chart design. This is where you can draw a diagram of what pages should go to what. For instance, you’ll want to have your main home page go to a few other pages.

As a real basic example let’s say you’re designing a website for the family. The first page (the page that everyone will see first) should have links to other pages; one for the kids, one for the photos and so on. It’s best to put this together first so you know every page that will be in your website.

Some basic things to remember in your design is to make sure people don’t get lost in your site. For instance, you’ll want to insert a link to each page and on that page a way to get back, besides using the back button on your web browser.

Photos are great for a website, especially when you want others to see them. But keep in mind that grandma’s computer might be a hand-me-down from the family so it isn’t as fast. So keep your photos small and easy to download.

Colors and designs are important. Just like painting a house or a room you’ll want to choose a color scheme. —

Coolhomepages.com shows a lot of award winning websites that are sorted by what is soo cool about them. For more flashy websites that animate, go to the section of coolhomepages.com for flash websites. Some designs are soo cool you get completely lost as their purpose and what the website is.

Finally when your website is done, don’t advertise it yet. Have some friends including people that know nothing about computers look at your website. Ask them questions and say what could be different or better about the site. Don’t defend your site, take the critics seriously, because they are the people that will eventually have to see it.

On a personal family website, it is very important not to disclose personal information such as home addresses, phone numbers or any up and coming plans like a vacation or field trip. The information you put on a website is available throughout the world and any and everyone can see it.
