JANUARY 1, 2003, BSA REGISTRATION FEE WILL INCREASE

Beginning January 1, 2003, the Boy Scouts of America will increase its registration fee from $7 to $10 per year for traditional members. This increase will affect youth and adults registering in packs, troops, teams, crews, ships, as well as council employees, and council and district volunteers. The last time traditional registration fees were raised was 14 years ago. Even in an era of moderate inflation, that is a long time not to have increased our registration fees.

NEW THREE RIVERS DISTRICT STAFF

Three Rivers District staff has two new faces. Tom Cochran began his duties as Three Rivers District Executive on July 16, 2002. Cochran, an Eagle Scout, and father of two Eagle Scouts, has a long tenure as a volunteer Scout Leader in Thunderbird District. He is leaving his position of 32 years with Raytheon to pursue a dream he had while in college . . . to become a professional Scouter.

Ola Ray began serving the Three Rivers District as a part-time employee in mid-May. Ola is responsible for scheduling, speaker recruitment, and training, for the “Career Speaker” series Learning for Life programs in the Allen County Schools. Please welcome Ola and Tom as they join our efforts to help young people become better citizens.

A SCOUT TO THE END

(Written by Steve Fahy, Assistant District Commissioner North Haven, Connecticut and used by permission of The Scouting Way Newsletter – www.ScoutingWay.com)

One of the fondest memories I have of Scout gallantry is of an event at Camp Sequassen in 1977. At the end of the camp week the entire camp competed in a campsite competition. One of the special events was canoe jousting where each campsite entered a team. One Scout paddled while another Scout stood in the canoe with a long pole with a padded end. The object was to knock over or sink the other jouster.

Two competed at a time with the winner moving on to compete against other winners. The final event was between two talented teams who were excellent and seemingly unbeatable. The two canoes battled for what seemed to be a very long time.

With talent and strategy they repeatedly attacked and then backed off to stabilize before attacking again. It seemed impossible that the Scouts would ever fall over.

Eventually, one canoe took on so much water that it began to sink. The other canoe graciously backed off as the sinking jouster looked down and assessed his doomed fate. He stood tall with his staff standing strait by his side.

With all the dignity of a proud warrior he snapped a Scout salute to the other team. The salute was returned. The doomed jouster held that salute until the canoe went under. The camp went wild and the roar seemed deafening.

As the proud Scoutmaster of the Scouts in the winning canoe I was jubilant, but I also realized the heart-warming gallantry and true Scout spirit that I had just witnessed.
