HERE’S TO YOUR HEALTH

This week’s Here’s To Your Health is a continuation of Sister Ruth’s story, we ended last week with…Many of us have wasted a lot of time praying for selfish ends, it doesn’t work and we can easily see why… If we belong to a religious denomination that requires definite morning devotion, we also attend to that. If not members of religious bodies, we sometimes select and memorize a few set prayers that emphasize the principles we have been discussing. There are many helpful books available and suggestions about these may be obtained from one’s priest, minister, or rabbi. Make use of what they offer. As we go through the day we pause, when agitated or doubtful, and ask God for the right thought or action. We constantly remind ourselves we are no longer running the show, humbly saying to ourselves many times each day “Thy will be done.” We are then in much less danger of excitement, fear, anger, worry, self-pity, or foolish decisions. We become much more efficient. We do not tire easily, for we are no longer burning energy foolishly as we did when we were trying to arrange life to suit ourselves. It works-it really does. We alcoholics are undisciplined. So we let God discipline us in the simple way we have just outlined. But, this is not all. There is action and more action. “Faith without works is dead.” “By our daily actions let us show others our faith…”

When I get up in the morning, even before I go to into the bathroom I ask God to direct my thinking and that it be divorced from self-pity, dishonest or self-seeking motives. I do this because I don’t trust myself and if I start thinking about something I have to do, or don’t want to do, my thinking can get confused before I ever leave the bathroom. The Big Book’s passage on pages 86 and 87 is the recipe for our daily actions it begins with… On awakening…and it’s a lot of words to memorize especially for beginners so I began by saying, “God please keep me from drinking today and keep my thinking straight.” Today I no longer have a drinking problem, but I still have a thinking problem so I must ask God for His guidance and help. The fatal malady of alcoholism is cunning, baffling, powerful, and it can make us believe all sorts of lies. Alcoholics can’t distinguish the true from the false and so we must ask God to direct our thinking and if we do that we won’t drink. We must trust God and put ourselves totally in His hands. This is something that takes time and most newcomers think it’s impossible to totally surrender and I must confess it wasn’t easy for me either, but by persistent practice these “new” daily actions will happen. It takes daily practice, lots of practice, but it’s worth it because it gives us a new and wonderful intuitive “Sixth Sense.”
