THE GOLDEN PEBBLE

One day, Ali and Julie were taking a walk in the forest.

“Wow!” Ali shouted. “This one is huge!”

“All of them are huge,” replied Julie as they looked at the pretty pebbles.

“Hey, I just noticed something,” commented Julie. ” There’s a pattern of pebbles ahead. Look! Do you see the green one, red one, blue one, and yellow?”

“Wow!” That is strange,” replied Ali.

As they walked back to their cottage they talked about Ali’s collection of pebbles and how she needed one more to make her collection complete.

“Julie, I need to get a golden pebble! Then I can take it to “show and tell.”

“Well, I don’t know if we will ever find the golden pebble. We’ve looked everywhere. You know, sometime we should follow the pattern. I feel that it is somehow lucky…”

“Maybe,” Julie replied.

When they got home they ate supper and hurried to bed. Both sisters were very excited about starting out on their venture the next day. So Julie and Ali set out. They searched and searched. When they finally came to the very last pebble it was golden and it sparkled.

“Wow!” they both shouted together.

“Not so fast!” screamed an ugly green troll. “You are not getting that golden pebble until you get through me first.”

“Okay,” Ali whispered trying not to sound scared, but she knew her voice was shaking.

“So!” the troll said, “your first mission to get the golden pebble is to look your opponent in the eyes.

Julie and Ali found themselves face to face with an ugly old hag.

“Now,” the troll spoke, “you have to find 12 pebbles that are black and white, like a Zebra. First one to find it has won this round.”

He blew a whistle and they all began to search. Ali and Julie found 8 and the hag found only 4.

Ali and Julie both stuck their tongues out at the old hag.

“Enough!” cried the troll. “Our next event will be the first one who can answer 6 questions.”

“First,” said the troll, “How many pebbles does it take in a classroom collection?”

“Ohhhh! I know it,” said Ali, “113.”

“Correct,” said the troll. “That’s one for Julie.”

As the troll asked more questions, the score was Julie and Ali 4, and the hag 5.

“Okay,” said the troll, “Now, if Ali answers this question correctly, she wins the round!”

So, his final question was, “If the golden pebble is 4 pounds, approximately how much will a quad version of it weigh?”

“The answer is 2.8 pounds!” Julie said excitedly.

“Correct!” shouted the troll.

Then the troll said, “Whoever wins this round gets the golden pebble. All that you have to do is write me a letter telling me why you want it and information on it. If I approve your letter, you may have the golden pebble.”

So, Ali started her letter, “Dear Mr. Troll, I would like this golden pebble because I have a collection of other pebbles. I also want to take it to school to ‘show and tell’ to let my friends see its beauty. I know that it is approximately one ounce and I know the gold is a reflection off the Earth. I also think it would be great to have such a pebble. My sister and I would really appreciate it.”

The witch started screaming because she couldn’t think of any good reason why she should have it.

As it turned out, Ali and Julie got the pebble and the old hag got exactly what she deserved…nothing! When they got home the girls told their mother everything and they were very happy. The next day they showed the whole class the golden pebble.
