HALL’S RESTAURANTS FEATURED AT JUNE MATHER LECTURE
If you live in or near Fort Wayne, you’ve likely eaten at a Hall’s Restaurant. But are you aware of the rich history of the chain that came into existence not long after World War II?
Don “Bud” Hall will discuss the history of his family’s restaurants at the June 3 George R. Mather Lecture at the History Center, 302 East Berry, Fort Wayne. The 2 p.m. lecture is free and open to the public.
Hall is a third generation Fort Wayne business person and the son of the founder of the Hall’s Restaurants group.
The first Hall’s restaurant is still on Bluffton Road and was founded by Hall’s father in 1946. Both his father and grandfather were in the family meat market business, founded in 1918, and the restaurant came about when Hall’s grandfather died and his father left IU to move back to Fort Wayne to run the market and care for his three sisters and mother.
Noting the trends of supermarkets and how they would impact specialty food shops as well as America’s fascination with the automobile, Hall’s father ventured into the restaurant business and opened a drive in.
Hall’s now has 11 Fort Wayne locations and one in Indianapolis.
As Hall will tell you, the restaurant business is “never boring” and he will share memories of the years spent building the business and the people he has met in that time.
