FLOWERS-IT’S NOT TOO LATE
Gee, it sure seems too late for planting flowers but let’s not forget perennials. In May, we all planted our vegetables and our annual flowers, along with the early spring blooming perennials but now is the time for the later, summer blooming perennials such as coneflower, corral bells, coreopsis and day lilies. Other perennials to consider include shasta daisies, liatris, rudbeckia (black-eyed Susans), lupine and lavendula (lavender).
Perennials that may not be as familiar to you but still bring beauty are Lucifer, veronica, verbascum, nepeta and gaillardia. You really need to get out and visit your nurseries to see how these great perennials look. It is not good enough to simply call and ask to have them described to you over the phone. And do not forget that later in the season, there are late summer to early fall blooming perennials such as the ever-popular fall, garden chrysanthemums (mums) and asters and even pansies which when planted late in the season, can last all the way into December.
A great gift idea is to have your favorite florist/greenhouse/nursery make up a variety basket of many of these blooming perennials, ones that are in full bloom and ready to be put out, and then delivered to your friends for birthdays, get wells and even to the funeral home as a sympathy arrangement that can be transferred to their gardens. There are not too many regular florists that can offer this service but there are a few, or you can do the basket yourself. You would then get the credit for being so creative and thoughtful.
