Building Lake Memories
My granddaughter, Lulu, and my grandson, Tucker, along with the neighbor, Ellie, were off with another day of adventures. We were out on the boat, and the kids caught minnows in their Uncle John’s fishing net. Unfortunately, one of the minnows met with his demise on the way back to the cabin. The kids wrote stories about the now deceased minnow, and had a funeral for him. Lulu wrote the eulogy, and they sang, “Amazing Grace” over the grave. They decorated it with flowers and left a poem on the top. They then set about being mourners. They pretended to cry and flail and hugged each other, until the minnow had been properly mourned for.
Here is a copy of the eulogy written by Lulu and a picture of the gravesite:
“It was a sunny day outside and everyone was joyful. Ellie and I were going to tube to Olin Lake. Tucker borrowed a fishing net from my uncle and we got a blue bucket. We drove off in the boat. By the time we got to Olin Lake, Tucker had put down the net in the shallow end, where the fish swam, and hoped he would get nice minnows. We were so attracted to the tube we went out past the drop off. When we got back there were many fish swimming over the top. Tucker raised the net and poured the minnows in the bucket. My grandpa forgot to tell him they needed oxygen every 5 minutes. When he found out we rushed home and we noticed that one was floating at the top. It was dead. Mr. Wiggles was the dead minnow. We hurried and had a ceremony.”
