THAT’S THE WAY I SAW IT
WHAT IS A CONTRACT?
Years ago we didn’t know too much about contracts. People told me my grandfather sold farm equipment in a field with a handshake. The handshake made it a binding agreement.
The dictionary says a contract is: “An agreement between two or more people to do something or an agreement written and enforceable by law”
Derek Lee (Cubs first basemen) wants to get a new deal done and he made it clear (according to the newspapers) he’d prefer to have a new contract in place before the season starts. His contract has another year to go. “If it’s a deal and I feel it is fair for me then I would sign it. It’s still a business.”
Fair in the dictionary states, “the general word implies the treatment of both on all sides alike without reference to one’s own feelings or interest.”
Baseball is a business, contracts are business documents, but players are contradicting themselves…Which isn’t a proper stand for a role model. However, if millions of dollars are involved who cares?
In the end, the baseball fans pay for this. Isn’t that the way most of us see it?
