A HEALTHY DAY

Teas

Well, fall is officially here and that means that winter is just around the corner and with that comes the cold. I myself am a very seasonal person and no matter what the season is, I try to enjoy it as best as I can. This week I am going to have a little fun with my article and write about my favorite thing to do in the fall and winter and that is to sit by a warm fire and sip on some hot tea. Now there are many varieties of teas you can drink but I am going to go over some of them, and also the health benefits of each.

Green tea is one of the best sources for antioxidants. Chamomile is good for headaches, tension, stress, insomnia, and restless children.

Echinacea is good for influenza with aches and pains (it helps boost the immune system). Devils claw is good for arthritic flare-up. Peppermint is used to help the symptoms of indigestion. Some combinations of certain teas can also be used for remedies.

Peppermint, elderflower, and yarrow for colds and flu; meadowsweet, chamomile, fennel seed and peppermint are good for indigestion; chamomile, lindin, and skull cap for relaxation; chamomile and rosemary for headaches; valerian and feverfew for migraines; 10 parts cramp bark and 1 part ginger for period pains. These are just a few of the many combinations passed down for generations which were and are used to help fight the symptoms of all types of diseases.

These of course should not be used solely for the purpose of treating a condition and if one does have any of these conditions they should always see their family physician first. Some people may also have contraindications or allergies to the above mentioned teas so it is important that you explain to your doctor what teas or supplements you are taking to see if there will be any reactions or side effects.

Most of these mixtures and teas are not available in stores. You can find some of them at the Fort Wayne Co-Op on Sherman but here at Nill Family Chiropractic and Wellness Center we are starting to put many of these remedies together to make them available to our patients and the public. We also have teas from a company called “The Republic of Tea.” You might have seen this brand in some bookstores like Boarders. My favorite is “Honey Ginseng” and “Kiwi Pear” green tea.

If you have any questions or would like to visit us, please feel free to do so. We are located at 4656 W. Jefferson Blvd., Ste. 240, Fort Wayne, IN 46804. (In the Professional Park West Properties Office Park behind Best Buy and across the street from Neuhouser Lawn and Garden Center).
