The Sporting News, July 12, 2004 had an article “What Can Steroids Do To You.” Although the writer didn’t mention names, he gave examples of many peoples’ health problems using steroids. I believe most of what it stated is true.
Babe Ruth in 1927 hit 60 home runs. He broke his 1921 record when he hit 59. Not until 1961 was Ruth’s record broken by Roger Maris with 61. Before 1961 there were some close ones; Jimmy Foxx with 58 in 1932 and Hank Greenberg, 58 in 1938.
Then, almost 30 years later everybody was breaking 61. It was obvious to everyone except MLB that something was going on.
Kindred’s article was one full page. He ended his story with “Here I have only one thing to add. Heaven Help Us.”
Small problems, when not addressed early become big problems later on.
