SCOUTING SMOKE SIGNALS

I would like to reassure the residents of Lakewood Addition, your 39 foot – 6 inch flag pole has not been stolen. It was taken down and carted to a warehouse to be painted. Robert Jobe, a Life Scout in Troop 38, sponsored by Calvary United Church here in Waynedale chose this for his Eagle Scout project. His project, I think, consisted of having the trees pruned, painting the flag pole, refurbishing the rope that holds the flag, putting in benches for walkers to stop and rest on, and doing some landscaping. I understand he is currently accepting donations to help pay for materials. If anyone would care to donate money towards this worthwhile project – please send your donations to Boy Scout Eagle Project, c/o Calvary United Methodist Church, 6301 Winchester Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46819.

HAPPY NEW YEAR and let’s all strive to make it a brand new year by doing what you/I/we have put off for so long. Take your family camping – take your kids fishing – teach your kids how to hunt and shoot – take your family to the YMCA/YWCA and teach them to swim (it could save their lives and yours) – go canoeing – write a book – go hiking – visit and join your local library – visit an old folks home and talk to the residents (you’re going to be one someday, you know) – visit several state parks this summer – join Scouting.

You can do the same old things you did last year, that accomplish absolutely nothing, like: hang out, go to movies, hang out, go to the mall, hang out, play cards, hang out, watch TV, hang out, shoot pool, hang out, etc., etc., etc. . . . ! God only gave you so much time on this good earth; make the most of each and every minute.

“A CODE TO LIVE BY”

by Jim Molebash, Field Director

A SCOUT IS KIND

I was always told, “. . . you can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.” I never asked why in the world you would want to catch flies. Kindness, as a practical matter, does make one easier and more pleasant to be around.

The Scout Handbook says, “We live in a world that has more than its share of anger, fear, and conflict. Extending kindness to those around you and having compassion for all people is a powerful antidote to the poisons of hatred and violence.”

The Scout Handbook says, “kindness is a sign of true strength – to be kind you must look beyond yourself and try to understand the needs of others,” (Sort of walk a mile in my moccasins.) William Penn wrote, “I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore that I can do, or any kindness I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”

THIS I BELIEVE

by Chris Mathes, Scout Executive

Dear Scouters, Parents, and people in Waynedale that support Scouting,

The Boy Scouts are having a birthday in February. Scouting began in the United States in 1910. Since then, almost 100 million youth have benefited from the character-building experiences they’ve had as Scouts. We didn’t touch all those lives at once. It took another several million adult volunteers almost a hundred years to work with those 100 million kids. Right now in our council, on any given weeknight, thousands of kids who really need it, are having a great time at a Scout activity, and building skills, confidence, and character in the process.

As a Scout Executive, I know my opportunity to touch the life of any one Scout is very limited. And when I consider our opportunities to influence one boy, I realize we have a relatively short time to do Scouting’s work in his life. That’s why I’m so grateful for your dedicated gifts of time and talent. Thanks for being there for your/our boys.
