YOUNG LOVE

Some things never change. Or, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Let’s all never get too old to remember what being in love when we were teenagers was like. My gang of friends from high school are now grandmothers. I sure would never have thought, when I was a teen, that my grandmother could have ever experienced any of the things that I was going through! ‑Oh horrors!!!! ‑As teens, we could not even imagine sexual feeling between our parents, let alone our grandparents! ‑I guess the joke was on us, (the kids). ‑It was we who were naive and uninformed. I don’t know what in the world we thought for sure, but it sure didn’t include anyone over 19 having feelings of passion. Those feelings were only for us. And not only that, we were quite sure that if we DID tell an adult what we were feeling, that they would not even “get it.” It really makes me laugh today, because I know good and well, that my grandchildren think the same thing. Kids are kids. They are the inventors of all original thought, all new ideas, and adventure was invented by them alone. I have a friend who’s sweet grandchild met a boy on the Internet (now, the internet we didn’t have, but if we had, we would have used it)! ‑They are both 16. ‑The boy is from New York and the girl is from Michigan. He wooed her and told her some adventures he had (that he hadn’t) and she shared her deepest feelings with him. He ran off with an excuse to his mother that he was going somewhere with family friends, and ventured out on a bus with only a small amt. of money in his pocket to meet his unseen love. His mother quite accidentally found out that he was not where he said he would be, and became numb with fear of what could have happened to her son who was so reliable and truthful. ‑What visions must have gone through her head until she found a name and number amongst his belongings she didn’t recognize. She called the number and when my friend picked up the phone, she heard the panic in the mother’s voice. Well, they both reassured each other and put the pieces together. ‑A real Romeo and Juliet story. I am sorry for all the distress this situation has caused both families, but there is part of me that remembers what it was like to be 16 and wildly in love. His name is Rich Harman and I love him still. Even though I have to admit I love an 18-year-old Rich. He is one of the best memories of my life. I always have that to refer to, mentally, when I hear of things like this. Young love cannot be thwarted. It might be nice if the kids didn’t give parents and grandparents heart attacks whilst pursuing their love interests! ‑I would give a warning about Internet romances, but my sister’s son is marrying a lovely girl he met on the Internet. It was love at first Email, and they will be getting married next summer. So how can I say these things never work out? Yep, they are risky, but so was the Fort Wayne Drive-In Theater!

Happy Memories, my friends,

Mae
